Biography

Jacob Ashba (he/him) is a 24 year old contemporary mixed-media artist who interrogates aspects of the human experience through oil, acrylic, and sculptural materials. Fascinated by the concept of sonder (the feeling one has on realizing that every other individual one sees has a life as full and real as one’s own), Jacob uses process-based material explorations and symbolic representation to excavate both the universal and unique experiences that make us who we are.

Jacob was raised in Michigan, but attended Columbia College Chicago for his undergraduate degree. He found a true appreciation for the arts after deciding to pursue what makes him happiest: expressing his sense of self through tactile means. Jacob graduated from CCC in 2023 with a BFA and minor in photography, and currently attends Michigan State University where he is pursuing his MFA, expecting to graduate in 2027.

Artist Statement

My art questions the phenomenon of personhood. Through processes that synthesize surrealist automatism and symbolic representation, I reflect on the existential nature of life. Using imagery as a means to explore the relationship that I hold with my sense of humanity, each work is made through visceral negotiation between materials and emotions. While my earlier work utilized representational imagery to establish a visual narrative, my current practice has moved toward a more material-heavy process. This shift reflects an evolution from emotional inference to physical presence, focusing on sculptures and paintings that not only capture an essence of my state of being, but also provide others an opportunity to converse with the art as its own entity. Each medium used maintains elements of its nature and actively works both with and against me. This tension generates organic moments of interaction between my artistic choices and the materials' intrinsic traits. In this sense, the art maintains its individualism and inherits a sense of humanity within its visual language.

My art has evolved from interrogating the broader existential inquiries of humanity in order to reflect on an equally existential yet highly personal aspect of myself: the relationship that I share with my maternal family from Korea. This connection between myself and my heritage has, in some ways, always existed as a peripheral influence on my life and continues to shape who I am. As I continue to explore what it means to be myself, my practice captures the friction and connection between the inherited memories of Korea and my lived reality as an American.
